The Fauna and the Flora
The land of the Foundation Pierre Vérots is not only a conservatory that protects Dombes landscapes with their associated species but also a priviledged place for long-term scientific research that can be used as an observatory by Dombes land managers.
No database has yet been established to permit a precise inventory of species living on the Foundation domain. Concerning Vertebrates, lists made up by various specialists workin on the Foundation domain can be easily accessed ; however the situation is more difficult for invertebrates since the lists evolve after each visit. It is planned to computerise the data acquired to permit an up-to-date listing of animal and plant species recorded.
Beyond making up lists, it is the concentration on the same territory of several species (common or not) that give its value to the Foundation territory.
A compilation of available data has nevertheless been done, allowing to establish a number of observed species per taxon:
+ of 1 400 species
+ of 1 000 species
+ of 100 species
Among all species present on the domain, some have a patrimonial value and/or a unfavourable conservation status.
Among others , we can cite the Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), le Eurasian Eagle- owl (Bubo bubo), the Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus), the Smooth Snake (Coronella austriaca), the Large White-faced Darter (Leucorrhinia pectoralis) or the Large Copper (Lycaena dispar).
Concerning aquatic plants, close to twenty protected species have been identified these last few years over the four ponds of the Foundation, of which four have a national protection status : Marsilea quadrifolia, Damasonium alisma, Luronium natans et Pilularia globulifera.
